“What bits do you remember?”

“I remember coming here for the first time after running away. And…you taking me back. Then some stuff of us together. I’m living with Koushiro… I can’t remember why, and you wanting to find a place for the two of us. And… my dad being arrested.”

“That’s it? You don’t remember anything else?”

“Bits and pieces of that. It’s like things have been wiped from my memory.”

“I’m sorry.” he said again, kneeling beside him and wrapping his arms around him.

Willis said nothing as the boy wrapped around him….

“Trust me, I wish I could take it away from you.” Daisuke’s voice shook. “I’d do anything to take those memories away from you, to take your place in them.”

“I just… Don’t let go.”

“I wouldn’t dream of it.” Daisuke held the boy tighter.

Willis eyes dropped and the boy went limp in Daisuke’s arms. His mind went blank and slipped into unconsciousness.

“Willis?” Daisuke shook the boy a little, but no response. “Willis?” he asked a little more frantically, holding the boy out in front of him to see what had happened, all the while still calling him out and shaking his limp body.

“Yea?” Willis responded weakly, his eyes slowly opening, “I… Feel all funny. Where am I?”

“We’re still at the park. Come on, I’m taking you straight home.”

“I don’t remember… Weren’t we showering just a minute ago? What happened?”

“No… w-we finished that. Hours ago. Then I went to go… do stuff, then we met here for dinner. You don’t remember that?”

“I don’t remember,” Willis said, “Everything’s all hazy.”

“Let’s get you home then.” Daisuke helped Willis to his feet and supported the boy as they walked back.

“Did I do something bad?”

“No, why would you say that?” Daisuke stopped walking. “I’m worried about you. You just forgot most of the day in about ten seconds. And it’s not even the first time this has happened.” Willis just stared at him, and after a moment of silence, Daisuke continued. “I’m going to take care of you from now on. More than I was doing before. I want you to be okay again.”

“Alright, but can I call my mom first?”

Daisuke stared for a minute. “Willis. What day is it? What’s the last thing you remember?”

“I don’t know… I just remember bits and pieces. Why?”
